After seeds from the Chinese tea plant Camellia sinensis failed to thrive, the seeds of the locally found wild Camellia sinensis assamica were cultivated and flourished. From Assam, tea growing spread rapidly through the different regions of India, giving rise to some of the finest teas in the world, ranging in taste from the malty, full flavours of Assam to the champagne delicacy of first flush Darjeelings.
