About Cardews

In the centre of historic Oxford lives the famous Covered Market, established in 1774 to provide a permanent home for the city's untidy market stalls. During the reign of Queen Victoria, the market was extended and covered over, providing an indoor / outdoor feeling to the shopping experience, and each shop now has its own, distinct identity. Unlike today the traders in the Covered Market originally had a monopoly of all sales to the Oxford colleges, but the same tradition of supplying goods of a very high standard and quality persists.

Cardews of Oxford Shop Front

Cardew & Co. was established in 1948, the oldest established supplier of fresh roasted coffees and fine teas in Oxford and moved from its former site in St. Michael's Street to the Covered Market in 1965, where high quality at honest prices is still our watchword.

We are extremely proud to boast that many of our customers have remained loyal, from student days to retirement, even though some now live in the far reaches of the world. This traditional relationship continues to thrive today.

We are not part of any chain of shops (unless you count our sister shop in Cambridge - The Coffee Shop - in which case we are a chain of two and intend to remain so), which allows us to remain loyal to our customers. The expanding international demand for our products has allowed us to create this website, ensuring we can reach as many customers as possible, without sacrificing the service and quality for our loyal customers.

We love to hear from our customers, so please get in touch with us and send in your thoughts and recommendations. All of your comments are greatly appreciated. Click here to send us a message
